Time delay compensators, made of alpha-BBO or calcite crystals, are used to correct time delays between specific wavelengths with orthogonal polarizations.
In processes like second harmonic generation (SHG), the crystal's group velocity mismatch (GVM) causes time delays between fundamental and harmonic pulses. By introducing an opposite GVM, time delay compensators improve pulse overlap for subsequent processes, like third harmonic generation (THG), in a second nonlinear crystal.
