Glan Thompson polarizer consists of two right-angled prisms that are cemented together by their long faces.Birefringence splits light entering the prism into two rays, experiencing different refractive indices; the p-polarized ordinary ray is totally internally reflected from the calcite–cement interface, leaving the s-polarized extraordinary ray to be transmitted. The prism can therefore be used as a polarizing beam splitter.A large acceptance angle is a characteristic feature of Glan Thompson polarizers.
Glan Thompson polarizer is made of two calcite prisms or Alpha-BBO prisms cemented together. Two types of Glan Thompson polarizer are available. One is the standard form and the other is the long form. Their length to aperture ratios are 2.5 : 1 and 3.0 : 1 respectively. Glan Thompsons tend to have higher extinction ratio than air spaced polarizers. In the ultra violet spectrum, their transmission is limited by absorption in birefringent materials as well as the cement layer. Alpha-BBO polarizers and Calcite polarizers can be used from about 220 to 900nm and 350 to 2300 nm respectively. It is recommended for low-to-medium power applications.
The polarizers have the widest field angle of any design. The standard form of this polarizer with 2.5:1 length to aperture ratio has a full acceptance cone angle of more than 15 ° @ 589nm, symmetric about the input axis, whilst the long form with 3:1 ratio has a field angle >26 ° .

How does a glan Thompson polarizer work?
Glan Thompson polarizers consist of two cemented prisms made from and Alpha-BBO or calcite. Unpolarized light enters the polarizer, then is split at the intersection of the two crystals allowing s-polarized (e-ray) light to continue and p-polarized light (o-ray) to be reflected.
What is the characteristic of Glan Thompson polarizers ?
Compared to the similar Glan Laser polarizer, the Glan Thompson polarizer has a wider acceptance angle, but it is only suitable Low Power laser Application due to without escape windows and adhesive structures
What are the application of Glan thompson polarizer ?
This polarizer is ideal for removing interference fringes from transmission spectra recorded at Brewster's angle and for obtaining optimum sensitivity for specular reflection spectroscopy measurements.
